There is much debate over what the best definition of self-esteem is. Many people believe it to be a state of mind that we all possess. Others believe that it is a set of emotions we can control. Still, there are others who believe that self-esteem is nothing more than a perception we have of ourselves. What exactly is it then that we are all seeking when we speak of self-esteem and how to increase it?
When we have a high self-esteem, we feel confident and happy with who we are. Our state of mind is so positive that nothing stands in the way of our success. In fact, our lives are almost perfect. But does this happiness last? Sadly no.
One of the main problems people have with having too high a state of ego is that it becomes insulated from reality. We feel so secure in our belief system that all that really matters is what we think about. This results in our becoming closed minded to the world around us. We believe that our world is peopled with inferior people who are out to get us. This can lead to depression and other mental illnesses.
To get out of this state of self-doubt, it is necessary to find a medium to bring the mind into focus. That is where our state of mind must come from. The belief we have about our self should be one that is informed by reason and evidence. That’s the only way we can make our ego go away.
To help improve our state of self-esteem, we need to be more logical about the things we believe. Too often, our logic works against us. That’s why it is important to listen to experts, especially those who have been in this industry for a long time. They can help point us in the right direction. They may tell us to remove harmful beliefs and learn new ones.
For instance, there are those who say people’s egos are related to their state of health and well being. Therefore, they suggest, we ought to eat healthier and take vitamins. In addition, they may tell us to get enough rest. These things can improve the quality of our lives and make us feel better about the things happening in them.
In order for us to maintain a level of self-esteem, it is also important to be happy. Some people confuse happiness with contentment. They are two very different things. In order to be happy, we must be content. This does not mean, however, that we should become a recluse. It just means that we should spend time doing things that make us happy.
On the other hand, in order to maintain a level of ego, it is important to be self-confident. This does not mean, however, that we should brag about our good points. What it does mean is that we should spend our time focusing only on our good points. By doing this, we will soon find ourselves with more self-esteem. If we cannot change that, at least we can try to improve on the things that we like and let others know about those.
In addition to focusing on our good points, it is also important to spend time thinking about what we do not like. Why do we tend to focus on the negative things? It may have something to do with how we were raised or the person who raised us. Maybe we were afraid of our classmates back then or worried that we would embarrass ourselves in front of others. Maybe we were simply unfulfilled and did not know what to do with our energy.
Whatever the cause, it is important that we find ways to deal with those issues so that we do not have to deal with them as much. If we never learned how to deal with our issues, we would never learn how to build up self-esteem. It is not possible to do nothing but overcome those issues and build up our self-esteem.
As you can see, self-esteem vs. ego are an important issue to consider. It does take work, but that is true of any problem. We do not become successful at anything else without first working at it. If we try to skip the work, we will likely get left behind and never reach our goals. Therefore, it is very important to make sure that we treat ourselves well.
